Chapter Eleven

Carter

My hand freezes midair, hovering over the doorknob to Tristan’s bedroom.

“You don’t want him to know you said you still love me?” Tristan asks.

I feel lightheaded. She told him she loves him? A few days is all it took for her to give away what I foolishly thought belonged to me.

I step nearer to the closed door. My hands are hanging heavy at my sides. My head is now throbbing. I lean in to hear more of what they are saying. I don’t care that I’m eavesdropping.

“Thank you, Tristan. This is more than I deserve but something I desperately need,” Olivia says.

The room goes silent. I don’t want to think about what’s going on between them, what’s being said without needing to say anything at all. A surge of jealousy jolts my every nerve ending. He might be touching her. She might be letting him touch her.

Ten. Just breathe.

Nine. It’s going to be okay.

Eight. I’m fine. I haven’t lost her yet.

Seven. Sherry might still be right—Olivia and I may have a fairytale future waiting for us.

Six. What’ll I do if I’ve lost her?

Five. What can I do to remind her that she loves me?

Four. That it is me who holds her heart in my hands.

Three. Me who loves her without reason or explanation.

Two. How do I fight the unbreakable bond that links first loves?

One. There is nothing that I can have with Olivia that Tristan hasn’t already had.

No. I won’t accept that. Tristan never had Olivia’s heart when it mattered. He was nowhere in sight when she was falling apart or when she started hiding behind her baggy clothes. He isn’t the one who holds her when she has panic attacks. He doesn’t know Olivia. He knew Liv, and Liv is gone. He doesn’t know who she’s become. And knowing her now is something I have that he doesn’t. And won’t, if I can help it.

On the phone, he told me he knew she loved me, that he wasn’t trying to take her from me, but he lied. Somehow, he tricked my sweet, sad girl into loving him again.

I turn away from the door. My vision clouds with rage. Heat spreads up the back of my neck. Scanning the apartment, I contemplate what I can break or rip to pieces.

I notice a small statue of David, about a foot tall, sitting on the coffee table. Perfect. Soon it will be cutting through a canvas art piece hanging on the wall next to Tristan’s front door. A framed photo on the side table distracts me, stopping me from following through with my childish act of revenge. I pick it up and hold it in my hand. Olivia is kissing Tristan, her arm extended with a camera to capture the moment. They look so young. This must have been taken when they were dating in high school.

I want to break the frame against the wall. No, I want to break it on Tristan’s face. He’s holding onto his past with Olivia, and I hate him for it.
